Principal function(s): Autonomous learningIndividual workVocabularyGrammarStudentWebsite/other users supply

SKELL (Sketch Engine for Language Learning) is an online corpus platform that helps learners understand how words and sentences are used in real life. Users search for specific words, phrases, or linguistic patterns within these corpora, and SKELL provides examples of how they are used, “word sketches” (words which collocate with the target word), and similar words. It is available in English, German, Italian, Estonian, Russian, and Czech. SKELL is free to use and signing up is not required. It was developed by Lexical Computing Limited. Evaluation: SKELL is a practical tool for language learners to understand how words and sentences are used in context, supporting vocabulary acquisition and grammar comprehension. Moreover, it can be used by linguists and researchers to analyse language patterns and gain insights into authentic language use. SKELL allows users to submit feedback through an exclamation symbol on the upper right corner of its interface. It also provides a tutorial for use.

Cost: Free.
