Introduction

This ECML training and consultancy activity addresses the crucial role of language and languages in education. The offer is intended for teacher educators and those responsible for planning teacher education who are concerned with the development of language-related competences of different kinds of teachers. Participants will identify and describe the kind of competences language teachers and teachers of other subjects in their specific contexts need, in order to consider appropriate and concrete approaches and measures to develop these competences effectively.

This training & consultancy activity is a result of the project "A guide to teacher competences for languages in education".

Target groups

  • teacher educators and those responsible for planning teacher education who are interested in a theory-based and quality-oriented approach to developing teacher competences for languages in education;
  • stakeholders who are concerned with teacher education across languages and different subjects.

Results and benefits

This training and consultancy activity will enable participants to

  • engage with current models and frameworks of teacher competences for language education;
  • evaluate how specific features of teacher competence frameworks (e.g. competence descriptors, levels of competence, hands-on opportunities to develop competences) are applicable in the participants’ specific contexts;
  • plan, explore and consult with experts on creating and shaping curricula and activities for teacher education and development for their own specific language education settings, e.g. for foreign languages and the language of schooling;
  • contribute, through sharing their expertise and discussing their experience and needs, to a research and development project concerned with describing future needs for teacher competence instruments for different contexts.

Training and consultancy offer
Teacher competences

Trainings can be conducted in English, French or German.

This offer is targeted at teacher educators and curriculum planners who are interested in a theory-based and quality-oriented approach to developing teacher competences for languages in education. We specifically address stakeholders who are concerned with teacher education across languages and different subjects, such as those responsible for teachers of foreign languages, the language of schooling, and language-sensitive subject teaching.

Format of activity

    The following five stages are proposed:

    1. Identification and exploration of the status-quo of the participants’ teacher education context; identification of strengths, potential for development and needs related to languages in education
    2. Introduction to European developments in the area of teacher competences and competence frameworks
    3. Familiarisation with the ECML online Guide to teacher competences for languages in education, and exploration of frameworks and practice examples that are specifically relevant to the target group
    4. Hands-on work on selected aspects of relevant frameworks (e.g. competence descriptions; activities for reflection, professional learning opportunities), for the planning of teacher education curricula and exchange of expertise on practices in teacher education and professional development
    5. Development of action plans for putting new ideas and approaches discussed at the event into practice

    The activity can be adapted in various ways by opting to focus on:

    • a specific ISCED level, e.g. lower or upper secondary, primary etc.
    • specific areas of competence, e.g. teachers’ language competences, methodology, plurilingualism, competences for language-sensitive subject teaching
    • the needs of teachers at different stages of their careers, e.g. pre-service education or in-service professional development
    • either consultancy (e.g. concerning the planning of teacher education curricula, cooperation across subjects), or training (e.g. helping teacher educators with selecting competences to work on with their teachers or student teachers, fostering coordination across educators for different subjects).

    Expected cooperation from local organisers requesting this offer

    • Cooperation with the ECML expert team in defining the specific aims of the event, based on the participants’ profiles and expectations.
    • Offering the basic infrastructure for the training event.
    • Local organisation of the training event.
