Zoom

Principal function(s): Video conferencing

Zoom is a web-conferencing tool that can be used for synchronous online collaboration. The free version allows for groups of up to 100 people in a group call with a time limit of 40 minutes. Users can join a meeting with a URL or code. In a meeting, the host can share their entire desktop screen with their audience, an active window in their browser, or a whiteboard with illustrations and diagrams. Members of the meeting can also split off from the main meeting into breakout rooms of up to 50 people. There, they can discuss ideas and also ask the host for assistance if they need to. Another feature of the software is that it allows users to record their virtual meetings in MP4 and M4A video formats which makes it easy to track the coverage of a meeting, class, etc. The chat allows users to instantly share text, images, audio, or video files. Evaluation: The software is useful for people seeking options for online meetings, online courses and classes with several participants. Its whiteboard option makes classes run much more smoothly. It is perhaps the most well-known videoconferencing tool, and it is simple and intuitive to use.
