- a place where global challenges and controversial topics are not only discussed from various perspectives to facilitate a deeper understanding of these complex and culturally charged issues;
- a place where learners understand how language is used to shape discourses and how it impacts audiences. This is vital for learners to develop critical literacy skills that will protect them from misinformation and manipulation;
- a place that embraces the diversity of student abilities, experiences and perspectives, creating an inclusive environment where every learner feels valued and supported.
Such a multi-faceted and inclusive approach to language learning offers new and engaging opportunities for teaching literary and non-fictional texts (including social media, film, and TV shows) as a way of promoting the empathy and respect required to explore spaces for consensus with people “who don’t see the world like them and yet on whom they depend and to whom they are answerable" (Claire Kramsch, 2022).
Our approach will seek to reposition the language teacher as a powerful change agent and turn the language classroom into a hub for global citizenship.
