This project explores how foreign language classrooms may promote global citizenship. The project team will create resources to implement the pluriliteracies framework for deeper learning (PTDL) in order to make the foreign language classroom an inclusive space where students critically engage with global issues.

Why this project is needed 

Our project aims to enrich the language classroom by promoting pluriliteracies for global citizenship, a priority for ECML member states. This re-orientation is crucial because experts are increasingly and convincingly arguing that language learning must change post-COVID-19. Clearly, it is no longer enough to simply focus on communicative competences. What is needed instead is a shift towards deeper learning as a means of facilitating global citizenship.

Envisaged project results

Annotated guides and tools to put deeper learning into practice: a new task model for language learning (= deeper learning episodes); guiding questions, teaching strategies, planning templates and criteria to design, teach and evaluate deeper learning episodes.
Main target group: language teachers at secondary/vocational level.
Deeper learning rationales: videos explaining and exemplifying how the principles of deeper learning can be put into practice.
Main target group: language teacher educators for secondary/vocational schools.

How to get involved?

Workshop in 2026

In 2026, our team is excited to host an international workshop, welcoming participants from all ECML (European Centre for Modern Languages) member states. This event will be dedicated to showcasing our innovative conceptual framework along with practical tools and examples that support a fundamental shift in language education. Our goal is to foster deeper learning in the language classroom, serving as a catalyst for global citizenship. Attendees will have the opportunity to fully grasp our vision and methodology, articulated in their own words, and learn how to effectively implement a pluriliteracies approach to deeper learning. This workshop promises to be a pivotal step for educators and policymakers alike, towards embracing a more engaging and impactful language learning experience.
