Welcome to the Inventory of freely available online tools, developed within the framework of the ICT REV project of the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML). It brings together resources for language teaching and learning, selected by and for language educators. Use the filters and examples below to explore the inventory, or suggest a tool to be added.

OpenBoard, an interactive whiteboard

Digital whiteboards

Description: OpenBoard is a digital whiteboard for creating and delivering dynamic presentations, lessons, and interactive content. It allows users to easily incorporate text, images, sounds, drawings, and animations into customisable digital whiteboards. It also has a built-in selection of applications such as Wikipedia, a calculator, an HTML editor, and more. OpenBoard is free and open-source, so users can contribute to its development or modify the source code to suit their needs. To use OpenBoard, users need to download and install the software, which does not require registration or having an account.

Evaluation: OpenBoard is a valuable tool to facilitate student engagement, offering a variety of options to make classes more interactive and visual. Moreover, it is free and open source.

Cost: Free.

Respect for privacy Privacy evaluations indicate how a tool handles personal data collection, storage, and sharing, including GDPR compliance and security measures, among others. The ICT-REV team provides them for informational purposes, reflecting our best understanding at the time of review, but assumes no legal responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of these evaluations and encourages users to conduct their own assessments: High. It is somewhat difficult to find OpenBoard’s privacy policy but according to several articles, it commits to user privacy and data security. It operates without unnecessary permissions and avoids collecting sensitive user data, ensuring user information remains safeguarded. No user data is used for marketing or business purposes. Since it has to be installed, all user information is presumably stored in users’ devices. OpenBoard does not state compliance with the GDPR. See more here.
