● Accurate Pronunciation of Mandarin Sounds:
○ To recognize and produce the initials (consonants), finals (vowel compounds), and their combinations.
○ To distinguish between similar but distinct sounds, such as:
■ j / q / x vs. zh / ch / sh vs. z / c / s
■ -n vs. -ng endings (e.g., ban vs. bang).
● Mastery of the Tone System:
○ To be able to hear, distinguish, and produce the four main tones (flat, rising, dipping, falling) and the neutral tone.
○ To understand that tone is an integral part of a syllable's identity and that changing the tone changes the meaning (e.g., mā (mother) vs. mǎ (horse)).
● Development of Phonemic Awareness:
○ To be able to break down a spoken syllable into its Pinyin components (initial, final, and tone). A critical pre-literacy skill.
