Backchannel Chat

Backchannel Chat is a class discussion tool designed to encourage students’ participation and involvement during lessons, which can also help teachers to informally assess students’ knowledge on the topic at hand. Students can comment and vote on others’ messages in real time and all the discussions take place within a private, controlled and fun atmosphere.

Evaluation: Backchannel Chat is a great tool for teachers to encourage contact with and among their students while maintaining in control of the educational content and the direction of the discussion. The tool also allows teachers to send private messages to students which do not disrupt the rest of the class. In addition, it is easy for teachers to determine individual student participation since Backchannel Chat breaks down and records the number of posts per student.
