Mizou, an AI-powered platform for creating safe, privacy-friendly, educational chatbots

Quiz/exercise makersStory creatorsAI conversational interactionAI feedback & assessment

Description: Mizou is a platform which allows teachers to provide students with safe interactions with educational AI chatbots (virtual assistants or tutors) for specific learning objectives. Teachers set up a free account and can then either select an appropriate pre-made chatbot or create their own, providing the chatbot with a persona, a set of detailed instructions and relevant documents such as worksheets. The teacher then shares the link to this information with students, who are not required to sign in or have an account to access the chatbot. The students can then interact with the bots via text or voice, making it suitable for developing reading, speaking and writing skills. Mizou is free to use for teachers and students with some functionality limitations, and it is used by many educational institutions globally. In addition to the tutorial that features below, we recommend users also consult the information about Mizou provided by a specialist teacher Chris Parry blog post about Mizou.

Evaluation: Mizou is a practical and engaging tool, with a high regard for privacy issues. It enables teachers to use pre-made interactions or to create a personalised AI-powered bot with speech-to-text and text-to-speech features, which can facilitate real-time verbal interaction in 50 languages, which can be monitored and graded by the teacher. A potential disadvantage is that the free version limits the number of students allowed to access a session on a particular day, and also restricts access to more advanced reasoning models.

Cost: Free with restricted functionalities + paid plans available.

Respect for privacy Privacy evaluations indicate how a tool handles personal data collection, storage, and sharing, including GDPR compliance and security measures, among others. The ICT-REV team provides them for informational purposes, reflecting our best understanding at the time of review, but assumes no legal responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of these evaluations and encourages users to conduct their own assessments: High. Mizou does not require students to sign up or have an account to interact with chatbots, ensuring that no personal information is tracked or collected from them by default during participation. However, teachers must create an account and provide professional identification data, including name, email, and position, which is retained for the duration of use, plus a period of up to five years. The platform uses connection logs (IP addresses) and cookies for operational and statistical purposes, but it explicitly guarantees that no personal data is sold or transferred to third parties or commercial partners. Voice recordings are stored for a maximum of six months, while text transcriptions are kept for five years, though Mizou acknowledges users’ right to access, copy, rectify, object to the process, limit, and delete personal data at any time. It complies with the GDPR under the supervision of the French CNIL. See more here.
