ElevenLabs, an AI-powered text-to-speech generator

Audio recordingAI text processing & speech

Description: ElevenLabs is an AI-powered tool that converts text into speech in over 30 languages. It provides settings for voice-overs, sound effects, and multilingual dubbing with customisable voices, adjustable tones, and real-time processing. ElevenLabs supports multilingual content, so it is versatile for various audio projects. Accessing its services requires creating an account. Both free and paid plans are offered, with basic features available for free, and advanced options like voice cloning requiring a subscription. The platform was created by developers Piotr Dąbkowski and Mateusz Staniszewski.

Evaluation: ElevenLabs is a useful resource for creating audio for listening comprehension and pronunciation tasks. Its clear, authentic output speech exposes learners to natural accents, intonation, and rhythm, and sets it apart from similar text-to-speech tools. All in all, it is a time-saving tool for creating audio materials with an intuitive interface. The free version, however, limits users to 10 minutes of audio per month.

Cost: Free limited version with registration + paid options available

Respect for privacy Privacy evaluations indicate how a tool handles personal data collection, storage, and sharing, including GDPR compliance and security measures, among others. The ICT-REV team provides them for informational purposes, reflecting our best understanding at the time of review, but assumes no legal responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of these evaluations and encourages users to conduct their own assessments: Medium/low. ElevenLabs collects personal information such as email addresses and text or voice samples to provide its services, but also to train and improve its AI models. ElevenLabs shares with and sells data such as IP addresses and unique identifiers to third parties for different purposes, among which are marketing and advertising. ElevenLabs stores data securely with encryption and access controls, although it might transfer it to third countries for processing, including the United States and Singapore. It acknowledges users’ rights to access, modify, or delete personal data. It states compliance with the GDPR for users in the EEA. See more here and here.
