DeepL, an AI-powered translator and writing assistant

Autonomous learningTranslation tools

Description: DeepL is a versatile AI-powered tool that includes both DeepL Translator and DeepL Write. DeepL Translator provides translations between 32 languages and allows users to input text or attach documents for this purpose. DeepL Write is an advanced writing assistant that helps improve the quality of writing by offering alternative suggestions for grammar, style, tone, and word choice in the text entered. DeepL offers a free version with extensive features and a paid subscription with additional functionalities. While signing up for an account is not mandatory, it provides access to enhanced features and personalized settings. DeepL is developed by a company based in Germany.

Evaluation: DeepL is a useful, time-saving tool, even in its free version, offering both translation and writing assistance. In the case of DeepL Translate, it provides accurate translations and is arguably the most reliable translation software available. However, it is important to be aware that the tool may produce translation errors, especially as regards idioms and figurative meanings. Using the tool in a conscious, critical way can definitely improve students’ language proficiency, but this requires attention being paid to the optimal translation offered, as well as consideration of the alternative translations provided. DeepL Translate can also be used as a tool to improve writing skills in the user’s first language by translating a text into English and then back into the original language. The final text is then rid of grammar and punctuation mistakes and also stylistically more fine-tuned. In the case of DeepL Write, students can use it to improve their written texts and learn from grammar and stylistic corrections in their target language, while it can be used by educators as an initial evaluation of students’ writing.

Cost: Free limited version + paid plans available.
