Digital Dialects, a website with learning games in 79 languages

Autonomous learningGame apps

Description: Digital Dialects is a website offering interactive language learning games and activities for 79 languages, sorted into different topics. Users navigate the site to access language-specific games to practice vocabulary, grammar, spelling, phrases, and scripts or alphabets. Vocabulary lists are accompanied by audio for practising pronunciation and listening skills. Learners can use Digital Dialects' games for independent learning or in the classroom. The website also provides information about culture and language, links to other useful resources, and language learning tips. Digital Dialects is freely accessible online without the need for signing up or having an account. It was developed by Craig Gibson.

Evaluation: Digital Dialects is a useful resource for learning dozens of languages. It is particularly suitable for younger learners due to its interactive and gamified features. For teachers, it can provide supplementary resources to enhance classroom instruction and reinforce language concepts in a fun and engaging way. Importantly, it contains games in minority and endangered languages such as Cook Island Maori, Horami, Saami, Nuiean and Karelian, which is not that common.

Cost: Free without registration

Respect for privacy Privacy evaluations indicate how a tool handles personal data collection, storage, and sharing, including GDPR compliance and security measures, among others. The ICT-REV team provides them for informational purposes, reflecting our best understanding at the time of review, but assumes no legal responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of these evaluations and encourages users to conduct their own assessments: Medium (?). Digital Dialects is run mainly by volunteers and therefore does not monetise any of its contents. It does not gather user data since it does not require logging in and pledges not to share user data with any third party. However, third parties such as Google or Amazon collect cookies for advertisement. It does not mention compliance with GDPR. Digital Dialect’s privacy policy misses lots of important information.
