A European learning network for professionals supporting work-related second language development

Language for Work is a European learning network for professionals teaching the language of the host country to migrants and ethnic minorities in work-related contexts. The network helps members share and develop their practice.

Note on workshop focus

This workshop focuses on supporting adults to develop work-related language skills in the majority language(s) of the country where they are resident. Typical learners include migrant/ethnic workers and also low-skilled workers who are native speakers of the majority language(s) of the country.

Please note that the workshop is concerned with work-related language learning for adults.

Expected outcomes of the workshop (for the participant)

  1. Access to a European multidisciplinary professional network;
  2. Greater understanding of adult language learning for vocational contexts in different European countries;
  3. Greater awareness and understanding of the role of language development for vocational competence.
Participants' profile:
 
Professional background: Researchers with an interest in workplace learning/language development/migration/ skills/ labour market participation; national skills policy makers; workforce development professionals; teacher trainers working in the field of adult second language learning; vocational instructors; providers of apprenticeships & pre-employment programmes; teachers of the majority language involved in or planning workplace provision, employer and trade union representatives.

Experience, competences required: Expertise/professional interest/practical engagement in skills/workforce development policy and practice; adult second language acquisition; social cohesion/inclusion; workplace learning; migration studies/policy; readiness to engage with interdisciplinary issues and with participants from diverse professional backgrounds; capacity to act as a "change agent" advocating for progressive policies and practices in this field.
 
Expected involvement/tasks before, during and after the event:

Before: Review policies and practice in own country/region relevant to vocational language learning for migrant/ethnic workers and/or low-skilled majority-language speaking workers; review (briefly) Language for Work website (//languageforwork.ecml.at/)

During: Active participation, e. g. involvement in small group work, discussion of policies and practice in own and other countries/regions

After: Willingness to disseminate results in own country/region and commitment to sustaining a European learning network beyond the project
