Portfolio – Language education in cross-border vocational education

We have developed a portfolio based on the European Language Portfolio. Our portfolio is integrated throughout our thematic sections and accompanies you through our three thematic sections. We encourage teachers as well as their learners to use this portfolio, it is not restricted to a specific target group. In our view, everybody, be it teachers or learners or interested stakeholders, is in a lifelong (language) learning process. Hence, the portfolio can be used by all interested individuals.

The portfolio invites you to (self-)reflection processes about your languages and cultures and your language learning and teaching. In this way, it also supports you in developing strategies and techniques for your cross-border language teaching and/or learning context. It starts with reflection about your languages and cultures on the basis of the European Language Portfolio.

Throughout our thematic sections, you will see a “your turn” icon. You can do the activity directly in the portfolio template that we provide. In this way, you have a single document for all of your outputs. This is easier for organisation, and - and this is important! - it allows you to document and follow your learning process, ideas, thoughts and development.

This portfolio is based on the European Language Portfolio. It is adapted to the context of this project, which is language education in cross-border vocational settings. 

The portfolio accompanies you through our modules and thematic chapters. It aims at initiating and implementing (self-)reflection processes about your language learning and teaching. In this way, it also supports you in developing strategies and techniques for your cross-border language-teaching context.

The portfolio contains three parts: 

1. Votre passeport linguistique

Votre passeport linguistique vous aide à construire une vue d’ensemble de vos compétences linguistiques dans vos différentes langues. Étant donné que les compétences linguistiques sont dynamiques et évoluent au fil du temps, il est recommandé de mettre à jour régulièrement votre passeport linguistique. De cette manière, vous pouvez également documenter et suivre vos processus d’apprentissage des langues.

Un passeport linguistique est créé sur la base d’une grille d’autoévaluation, qui comprend les compétences — écoute, lecture, interaction verbale, production, écriture — et fait référence aux niveaux de référence communs (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) du Cadre européen commun de référence.

2. Votre biographie langagière

Votre biographie langagière montre également votre répertoire linguistique et culturel sous une forme visuelle et vous aide à mieux planifier, réfléchir et évaluer vos processus et évolutions linguistiques.

Pour commencer : Créez votre Portrait linguistique

Prenez du temps et créez une représentation visuelle de vos langues et cultures sur une feuille blanche. Vous pouvez utiliser des couleurs, des symboles, des notes, des dessins, des émoticônes, etc. — tout ce qui vous vient à l’esprit. Une fois terminé ce travail, essayez d’expliquer votre portrait linguistique.

Ces questions peuvent vous guider : Quelles sont les langues que j’ai illustrées? Pourquoi les ai-je choisies ? Que signifient ces langues pour moi? Quel rôle jouent-elles dans ma vie? ...

3. Dossier

Le dossier complète le passeport linguistique et la biographie linguistique. Il sert à rassembler votre matériel d'apprentissage et à documenter vos réalisations. En outre, les activités et les tâches de réflexion de nos modules peuvent être classées dans cette partie du portfolio. Vous reconnaîtrez ces activités aux icônes suivantes :

1. Your Language Passport

Your language passport helps you develop an overview of your language proficiency in your different languages. As language proficiency is dynamic and changes over time, it is recommended to update your language passport at regular intervals. In this way, you can also document and keep track of your language learning processes.

A language passport is created based on a self-assessment grid, which includes the skills – Listening, Reading, Spoken Interaction, Spoken Production, Writing – and refers to the common reference levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) in the Common European Framework of Reference

2. Your Language Biography

Your language biography further shows your linguistic and cultural repertoire in a visual form and helps you to better plan, reflect on and assess your language learning processes and developments.

To start: Create your Language Portrait

Take some time and create a visual representation of your languages and cultures on a blank sheet. You can use colours, symbols, notes, drawings, smileys, etc. – whatever comes to your mind. When you have finished, try to explain your language portrait.

These questions may guide you: Which languages have I illustrated? Why have I chosen them? What do these languages mean for me? Which role do they play in my life? …

3. Dossier

The dossier expands the language passport and the language biography. It serves to collect your learning materials and to document your accomplishments. Furthermore, the activities and reflection tasks from our modules can be filed in this part of the portfolio. You will recognise such an activity by the following icons:

The first two parts are about your linguistic and cultural repertoire in general. They give you greater awareness of your plurilingualism and your (language) learning processes. The third part shifts the focus onto language education in cross-border vocational education and refers to the modules and thematic chapters developed in this project. Each part offers a range of advice and information. Your portfolio can be saved in digital or paper form.
