A ROADMAP for schools to support the language(s) of schooling
The online training and consultancy event Supporting the Language(s) of Schooling – The ROADMAP has provided an inspiring professional experience for educators and school leaders committed to fostering inclusive and language-aware education. Grounded in a whole-school approach, the programme highlighted the essential role of language in learning across all subjects and encouraged participants to explore the multiple dimensions of language-sensitive teaching.
Beyond theoretical insights, the ROADMAP experience offered practical tools and strategies to support students’ academic and linguistic development. Participants reflected on their own school contexts, collaborated in breakout sessions and explored ways to design effective development plans promoting equity and plurilingual education.
Through the expertise of Nermina WIKSTRÖM (Sweden) and Selin ÖNDÜL (Switzerland), the event deepened understanding of how language can become a bridge for knowledge, participation, and success for every learner.
What the ECML offers through initiatives like this – complemented by its rich collection of publications, self-assessment instruments and training workshops – represents a significant step towards integrating language as a key component of quality and inclusive education in today’s ever-evolving school landscape.

Two-day workshop on modern approaches to language teaching – ECML Training and consultancy: MedVITbox 2025 Slovenia
The National Language Working Group, in cooperation with the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) in Graz, organised a two-day workshop on October 8 and 9, 2025, aimed at members of the Subject Curriculum Commissions for Languages. The workshop was led by two ECML experts, Maria Stathopoulou (Hellenic Open University, Greece) and Laurent Rouveyrol (Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, France), and was conducted online due to objective circumstances.
A total of 32 participants attended the workshop, including university professors, consultants from the National Education Institute of the Republic of Slovenia, and primary and secondary school teachers.
The training provided participants with insight into current trends in language teaching, based on the CEFR Companion Volume. It introduced an action-oriented and learner-centred approach to language learning, with particular emphasis on the role of mediation in both oral and written communication - within a single language and across languages. Additionally, the importance of plurilingualism, multilingualism, and interculturality in the modern learning environment was highlighted.
Participants explored ways to meaningfully integrate these approaches into planning and everyday pedagogical practice. The knowledge and materials acquired during the workshop will be adapted and used by participants for teacher training activities related to the implementation of the new curricula and knowledge catalogues.

National Training Workshop “Using ICT in support of language teaching and learning (ICT-REV)” (15-16 September 2025, Kiel, Germany)
On 15 and 16 September 2025, a special workshop organised by the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML – Council of Europe) took place at the Kiel Event Centre. Participants from all sectors of education involved in teacher training and further education in modern foreign languages in Schleswig-Holstein assembled to develop their skills further. Representatives from the federal state's two universities, the Europa-Universität Flensburg and the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, along with their affiliated teacher training centres, were also present. This diversity of perspectives fostered a lively working environment where current knowledge and experiences could be shared across institutional and foreign language boundaries.
The workshop centred on the ECML inventory of digital tools (ecml.at/Resources/ICT). Together, the 25 participants explored how these resources can be utilised in specific teaching scenarios.
Besides technical input, the workshop offered a chance for exchange and inspiration. Many participants stressed how valuable it was to learn from one another and to incorporate new ideas directly into their practice.
The ECML thus significantly contributes to quality assurance in foreign language teaching. Teachers throughout Europe are invited to take advantage of these opportunities and become part of this strong network.
