A quality assurance matrix for CEFR use

How to get involved?

Individuals with a special interest and professional background in the topic of this particular project are invited to take up contact with the ECML National Nominating Authority in their country so that they can be considered for participation in the corresponding project workshop.

Profile of participants

For the central workshop, we consider it crucial to involve participants who have a proven experience with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at an institutional level. We are also looking for participants who are actively involved in second or foreign language teaching in primary, secondary, tertiary or adult sectors, be it directly as part of their professional activity, or indirectly through pre-service and in-service teacher education.

Professional background: We are looking for participants who belong to one or more of the following categories:

  • second or foreign language teachers, teacher trainers and curriculum developers;
  • teachers responsible for programme management and development, directors of studies, academic managers (public and private institutions);
  • heads of departments directly involved with language policy implementation;
  • coordinators of projects dealing with teacher education in relation to the CEFR;
  • pedagogic/academic coordinators responsible for assessment of learners’ competences in line with the CEFR;
  • persons responsible for the implementation of language programmes for migrants, possibly in relation to the CEFR.

Experience and competences required:

  • being (or having been) directly involved in CEFR implementation at any level (see categories above);
  • being currently active in teaching and teacher education/development or curriculum development;
  • competences in assessment in line with the CEFR descriptors.

Desirable experience and competences:

  • experience in quality assurance procedures related to language education

Expected involvement and tasks before, during and after the event:

  • Before: collect examples of CEFR implementation and fill out a template provided; list relevant experts and stakeholders involved in CEFR implementation.
  • During: present the work done in preparation for the meeting; contribute to document production, project planning, planning of piloting phases.
  • After: refine the information entered in the template and collect further examples of CEFR implementation in their respective countries, reporting on the project to their national authorities, networking.

Expected outputs of the workshop (for the participant)

  • Being part of a network of language professionals working on curriculum reform in a structured and potentially coordinated way;
  • A structured interview questionnaire to use for data collection on CEFR implementation in their countries;
  • A conceptual matrix for innovation and Quality Assurance;
  • A compendium of principles and techniques that facilitate innovation.

Expected outcomes of the workshop (for the participant)

  • Increased knowledge of Quality Assurance principles and procedures in language education;
  • An overview of the state of implementation of the CEFR in different countries;
  • Increased knowledge and awareness of factors that facilitate or impede successful innovation in language education.
