Who will benefit from this project?

The project targets all schools willing to focus on systematic quality improvement in order to foster the cognitive and linguistic abilities of all learners (and in particular the most vulnerable of learners), by enabling them to benefit from language-aware learning situations. Schools need to identify and address the needs that exist in order to create a better learning environment for their learners, who are the ultimate beneficiaries.  All the school’s stakeholders (head teachers, teachers, non-teaching staff, the wider community, parents and students) will be involved to help develop the learners’ competences in the language(s) of schooling.

Envisaged outputs

  • A web-based roadmap supporting schools in setting up their self-constructed strategy plan. It will include:
    • a user-friendly self-assessment tool enabling schools to identify their strengths and levers for progress in relation to language across all subjects and settings,
    • a visual selection tool to facilitate the drawing-up of the strategy plan,
    • concrete examples of approaches used by head teachers to develop a school language-sensitive culture,
    • concrete examples of classroom interventions and collaboration among teachers,
    • concrete examples of action research for the development of teachers’ awareness and practice on how to work with the learners on the linguistic dimension of all subjects,
    • concrete examples of specific linguistic support for learners encountering difficulties in their learning,
    • concrete examples of what non-teaching staff, parents and the wider community can contribute and the support they can get,
    • concrete examples of other challenges and solutions,
  • A guide to the implementation of the Roadmap

Envisaged outcomes

Help schools find self-constructed solutions in order to:

  • embed solutions in the school planning that comply with curricular requirements
  • support all teachers in their willingness and ability to contribute to the language development of their students
  • develop a whole-school approach based on an inclusive ethos that values language in all its dimensions and all kinds of learners.
  • foster a language-sensitive culture among all stakeholders (thus also involving non-teaching staff, parents and the wider community).

This is a project of the European Centre for Modern Languages within its "Languages at the heart of learning" programme 2016-2019.
