Zotero

Principal function(s): Citation managers

A tool to collect, organise, cite, and share articles, papers or websites on one platform. It accepts a wider variety of forms of information (websites, papers, news articles, videos, audio, etc.) to store and sort out. It is also linked to the search engine of internet browsers, rendering the storing process easy and fast. It needs to be installed for use. It can be viewed without having Internet access. Evaluation: A useful tool for researching information on the Internet, storing and organising the results. A time-saver for teachers to sort out teaching materials, and for students to organise materials for projects. The sharing feature may facilitate collaborative research. Useful for researchers as a citation tool. A good tutorial or introduction is needed before use. Advanced IT skills are required.

High. Zotero collects different types of data, including user-provided information (e.g., name and email for account creation), library data (when users synchronise their library with Zotero servers), and attachment files for file syncing. Additionally, they log IP addresses and browser information for security and diagnostic purposes. These data collections serve various purposes, such as user account management yet neither marketing nor advertising. Zotero may share some personal data with third-party services for the running of the service, but it neither rents nor shares it. Its privacy policy does not mention the use of cookies. Concerning security, Zotero is designed as a local program, so by default, data is stored on users’ computers. However, when synchronization or file syncing is enabled, then it is stored on Zotero servers. Zotero mentions taking security seriously and employing measures to protect user data. Zotero gives users the ability to disable various automatic communications and preferences. User can also delete their accounts, although specific details about data modification or access requests are not provided in the policy. Zotero does not state compliance with the GDPR. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... Plus d'info
