Road to Grammar

Principal function(s): Autonomous learning

This site provides learners with plenty of materials related to English grammar. It provides users with quizzes, notes and PDFs, so the content can be printed and used in class by educators but also by learners autonomously. It also contains resources for young pupils, teachers, and content tailored to business language. There is no YouTube video tutorial for this tool, but please see on Twitter @RoadToGrammar who identifies as running the site. Evaluation: An easy-to-use and practical site with materials to improve learners’ grammar and vocabulary and aid them in learning autonomously. The games tab has entertaining ways to learn a language with a gamified format. Teachers can use RoadtoGrammar as a shortcut to new material for English teaching. Overall, it is a valuable and straightforward tool for learning and teaching English. Within RoadtoGrammar there is a diagnostic tool called “Text Analyzer” that rates the difficulty of a text according to CEFR Levels. Moreover, this tool has other functions such as generating a suggested vocabulary list and directing users to an online dictionary to show their meaning.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
