Prodigy

Principal function(s): Game apps

Prodigy is an online, role-playing game designed to help children practice and improve their maths and English. In the game, students create a wizard character and embark on an adventure by solving maths and English problems to defeat monsters and earn rewards. Prodigy covers mathematical topics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and geometry, as well as many grammar topics regarding English. The game adjusts to the player's level and progress, making it a personalized learning experience. Evaluation: A tool that uses online games to make learning maths fun and entertaining, to which English is now added. Prodigy can be used as a complementary resource to make the learning process engaging for younger students. It can prove valuable when used for 20 to 30 minutes a day, although it may be problematic to uncritically gamify students’ learning process, as it may even promote video game addiction and little focus on real learning. Prodigy provides reliable research articles assessing its positive impact on students’ language learning process. It can be used in different ways by teachers, students, and also parents.

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... Plus d'info
