Anchor

Principal function(s): Audio recordingStreaming/radio services

Anchor is a totally free tool that allows users to create audio podcasts from a computer or mobile device. Alternatively, users can upload audio recordings made with other software. Once the podcast is ready, it can be distributed to the main podcast platforms with a click of a button. Evaluation: One big advantage of Anchor is that it is totally free. There is no trial period after which one needs to pay to continue using the tool. There is also no premium version at all, which means that all users have access to all functionalities. But most importantly, Anchor is an extremely easy-to-use, all-in-one tool with lots of interesting features. For instance, users can create professionally-sounding podcasts by adding background music or sound effects from the Library. The “Record With Friends” option permits creating a podcast with up to five remote guests on their mobile devices, which could be a great option for group speaking activities. For podcasts of less than 1 minute long, one can choose to have one's recording converted into a transcribed video, something that could be especially useful for lower levels. One slight disadvantage is that, although Anchor does have an editing tool, it is somewhat limited. If users are interested in doing more advanced editing, they might consider using audio editing software (e.g., Audacity) and then uploading the file again to Anchor for publishing. Anchor is owned by Spotify, so synchronisation is made easier. Similar privacy policies apply to both.
