TED-Ed

Principal function(s): Autonomous learning

TED-Ed is an online educational platform that creates interactive lessons with informative videos on a wide range of topics. It consists of TED-Ed animations which are short videos designed to enhance students’ learning with presentations from a variety of experts such as educators, historians and journalists. Each of these animated videos is accompanied by questions and other resources to be integrated into lessons. Evaluation: A useful tool for a flipped-classroom approach. Use one of the TED-Ed provided on their website or choose one of your own. Each video is customisable, and thus can accompanying questions and discussion topics be tailored to the lesson. The interface is easy to use and completely free.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
