As a result of the current situation in Ukraine, many teachers throughout the country have been forced to move their teaching online, in a similar way as occurred during the first months of the Covid-19 crisis in 2020. In response to this situation, the European Centre for Modern Languages’ expert team – “ICT in language teaching and learning” (ICT-REV), is organising a series of professional development events between 14-20 December for language teachers across Ukraine.

The principal goal is to address the immediate and urgent needs of Ukrainian language teachers by focusing on a pedagogically driven implementation of technology in language instruction, with a special emphasis on freely available ICT tools and open educational resources that can be utilized to enhance learning online, taken from the ECML’s ICT-REV inventory.

In a cascading approach, following the workshop, participants will be encouraged to organize similar professional development events for teachers in their respective regions.

This gesture of solidarity towards Ukraine, which is not currently a member state of the European Centre for Modern Languages follows the decision taken by the Governing Board at its June meeting to include Ukraine in all major activities of the Centre at least until the end of the current programme, 2020-2023.

The Ukraine representative on the Steering Committee for Education, Ms. Oksana Kovalenko from the Ministry of Education and Science, is working with the ICT-REV experts to tailor the activities to real needs on the ground.

This first workshop will be offered in English. Subsequent ICT-REV events for Ukrainian language teachers are envisaged in early 2023 in French and German.
