The bilingual volume Sprache(n) als europäisches Kulturgut / Languages as European Cultural Asset provides selected contributions which were presented during a symposium on this topic and the EU motto “Unity in diversity” organised by the Herbert-Batliner-Europainstitut / University of applied sciences of Salzburg (March 2011).

International experts discussed among others the following issues, focusing in particular on language culture, linguistic and policy related aspects: Does language help us connect with others or does it separate people? Does language diversity promote or hinder effective communication between European communities? What is the status of sign languages in Europe? The bridging role of literary translation between language cultures.
