Sendsteps

Principal function(s): Poll and survey creatorsQuiz/exercise makers

Sendsteps is a voting tool that can be used during lectures to interact with students. Teachers add questions to slides and, during the presentation, the audience is invited to respond using their devices. They can ‘vote’ on multiple choice questions or type in answers to open questions. Responses are received (anonymously or not) via SMS or the Internet and are published in real-time on the presenter's screen. Results can be downloaded after the presentation. Free for an audience of up to 20 people. Evaluation: Sendsteps is accessed via the PowerPoint toolbar, where users can select the option to add a vote or message slide. The questions and answers are created in PowerPoint and inserted as slides into the PowerPoint deck. The audience can respond to a question by either texting a number, tweeting with a specified hashtag, or submitting an answer on the Sendsteps website using a code. Responses are recorded via the online Sendsteps platform and automatically fed back to the presenter, who, depending on the type of question slide, can select which responses to publish, or reveal the results as a poll. Users must be connected to the internet to work with Sendsteps, and it is recommended that presenters have a second monitor set up to manage responses.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
