Puppet Pals 2

Principal function(s): Story creators

Puppet Pals 2 allows its users to create animated videos with voice and other sounds. They can select characters, put them on the stage, and record their voices. Characters can be moved around while users are recording, and can also then be removed and replaced with different ones. After recording the video, it can be saved and shared. Evaluation: This app is a fun way to boost creativity. It can be a very useful tool for helping students who do not like to speak in public, or for foreign language students who want to improve their fluency or accent. Users can invent completely new stories or retell their favourite ones. This is especially interesting because it allows for using standard characters and backgrounds or importing new ones from the photo roll. The saved shows cannot be edited but can be imported into iMovie and then edited.

Cost: Free with registration

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
