The Hellenic Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs (http://www.minedu.gov.gr/) is responsible for all issues pertaining to state, public and private education in Greece at all levels. It organizes and designs policies and constitutes the primary decision-maker for education. The Ministry coordinates its work through numerous research institutes, administrative divisions and stakeholders.
Among the research bodies which function under the auspices of the National Ministry the Centre for the Greek Language (CGL, at www.greeklanguage.gr and www.greek-language.gr) is responsible for issues and policies pertaining to the Greek language. The CGL constitutes a legal person governed by private law and is assigned to work as a co-ordinating, advisory and strategic organ of the Ministry. More specifically the CCL is organized in four academic divisions and is involved in the certification of the Greek language attainment, in the support and promotion of Greek, in matters of language and literature, lexicography, digital libraries, e-corpora and overall in any issue that relates to the Greek language. The CGL equally serves, due to its mission, as the focal point for information on the Greek language at both a national and an international level while it practically organizes scientific programs and dissemination activities in order to publicize its work and efficiently support a network spread in more than 120 countries. Within this framework the CGL has been assigned to be the ECML’s National Contact Point.
Services
The Ministry regularly requests experts in the field of Foreign Language education within the state sector to submit their CVs to the data base. Nominees are then selected from the data base. Care is taken to ensure that nominees are actively involved in the particular workshop topic. Participants are obliged to submit a Report after attending a workshop and complete a questionnaire.
Furthermore, there are hyper-links to the ECML and the Council of Europe via the Ministry’s website. This enables teachers to have direct access to these sites and the resources they provide. The Ministry does its utmost to disseminate all ECML information.
Τhe National Contact Point prepares the Greek edition of main ECML publications and sets the objective of communicating the ECML actions and initiatives to the interested parties. Within this effort it is to upload more information leaflets and resource material Moreover it has so far organized the ECML representation with an appropriate exhibition stand in significant language events.
The National Contact Point is currently designing and organising its new webpage in order to be actively present and organize the ECML representation in the most efficient manner.
