Jitsi

Principal function(s): Video conferencing

Jitsi is an easy-to-use open-source web-conferencing tool. Users can start calls in their browsers with no need to register by just putting in a meeting name. After that users can ask others to join with the generated codes and/or passwords. The tool allows users to share their screens with other participants, and stream and record their calls. Another feature is the possibility of raising the hand to indicate the willingness to speak. Jitsi also allows for tablet or phone participation, although the app needs to be downloaded onto a device therefore. Evaluation: Jitsi a suitable tool for people with strong privacy concerns that still want to use a videoconferencing tool but are sceptical about Skype or Zoom. Due to the extremely easy setup of a virtual room, it is a valuable tool as well for people who desire to create a meeting on the spot. Overall, it is an excellent alternative to other more well-known videoconferencing tools, and it does not raise any privacy concerns.
