This book presents the specificities of a multilingual and French-speaking educational school context where the first language repertoire is not a language of instruction in schools. The publication is based on several studies which illustrate different geographical areas from North America, Europe and Africa as well as extended timeframes. The publication provides perspectives on language education policies ranging from the continuation of the inherited status quo to policies which take the linguistic repertoires of students into account.

In her article entitled "Politiques linguistiques éducatives entre enjeux contextuels et enjeux internationaux : le cas du Val d’Aoste à la loupe des orientations du Conseil de l’Europe" (p. 19-36) Marisa Cavalli revisits critically the language education policies of the Valle d'Aosta.
