Inspiring language learning and teaching in the early years
Why it matters and what it looks like for children age 3-12

This project aims to help teachers and other educators prepare young children to successfully face the challenges of a culturally and linguistically diverse world. It will provide them with learning and teaching resources and strategies which take existing linguistic repertoires into account in order to (further) develop the linguistic and intercultural competences of both learners and educators. Read more

Who will benefit from this project?

The target audience for this project are pre-primary and primary teachers, other educators as well as teacher trainers and those involved in both initial and continuing professional development. Through the website, the project outputs will be available to a wider audience.

Envisaged outputs

  • The website will provide teachers and educators with practical tools based on existing resources (from both the ECML and the various Member states), a guide for teachers and other educators as well as inspiring practical examples relating to the three elements of this project (see above).

  • Recommendations and suggestions for the future development of resources by the ECML and for the adaptation of existing teaching material will also feature.

Envisaged outcomes

  • To make teachers and other educators aware of their own linguistic potential in addition to that of the children in their groups/ classes and to encourage them to use all these resources for the development of linguistic and cultural competences

  • To support teachers and educators in adopting a positive and open attitude to the linguistic repertoires of their young pupils and to foster a positive attitude towards linguistic and cultural diversity.

  • To support educational institutions in the implementation of a comprehensive, global approach which aims to provide a consistent and continuous implementation of language education from pre-primary to primary by providing them with tools which can be adapted to specific contexts.

  • To provide teachers and other educators from different countries and educational contexts with an opportunity to exchange ideas on language education practices.
