Flippity

Principal function(s): Flashcard creators

Flippity is a free online tool for creating interactive activities, games, and quizzes using Google Sheets. Teachers input data into a Google Sheets template provided by Flippity, and the tool generates various educational games and activities based on that data, such as flashcards, quizzes, bingo, and more. Templates are provided so that users only have to access the website and choose the spreadsheet they like. Each spreadsheet comes with a set of instructions that explains how to turn a document into pedagogically useful material and customise it. Users also have the option to create materials directly on a browser without using a Google account, but the functionalities are then more limited. Flippity was developed by Steve Fortna, a software developer. It is free to use and does not require signing up or having an account. Evaluation: Flippity is a useful and straightforward tool for creating interactive materials and thereby making classes more engaging and fun. It can be beneficial for developing linguistic skills like vocabulary acquisition, grammar practice, and language comprehension. For teachers, it can be quite time-saving since it offers a variety of pre-designed templates. Flippity contains a helpful page. Average IT skills required for its use, especially in Google Sheets.

Respect for privacy Does the tool require registration? Who can see my data? Can I remain anonymous?

High (?). Flippity’s privacy policy is very simple: no personal data is abused, misused, shared or sold since it does not have access to any other data other than data publicly published on Google Drive. No data ever gets uploaded, downloaded, saved or stored on Flippity services and, as a consequence, deleting a spreadsheet upon which Flippity is operating means deleting all data Flippity can access. Unfortunately, Flippity’s privacy policy does not elaborate on security. It does not mention compliance with the GDPR. See more here and here.

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
