Project involvement

Opportunities vary according to the life cycle of the programme:

  1. In advance of each programme there is a call for proposals which seeks experienced professionals in language education who wish either to submit proposals for projects in their area of expertise (and subsequently coordinate them) or to be involved as team members.
  2. During a programme persons working in or with a special interest in the subject area of the individual projects running are invited to take up contact with their national nominating authorities so that they can be considered for selection as participants within a workshop on this area. It is expected that the participants are in a position to act as multipliers for passing on information and involving a wider group of people in their countries. (Participants' area)
  3. In the final year of the (4 year) programme greater emphasis is placed on the dissemination of results and a wider audience can participate in these events and take advantage of the Centre's work and resources. (Get involved)

The ECML activity calendar provides details of the activities planned. Further information on the project submission procedure and the key ECML project activities; workshops and regional events is provided below.

Project submission

In general

Due to the long preparation time, the project submission phase begins well before a running programme comes to an end. The Call for Proposals document defines the aims and thematic areas of the next programme. There is one year between the publication of the Call and selection of the approved projects. Approximately 20 projects are selected and form the basis for the next medium term programme.

During the proposal submission phase, the ECML promotes the new programme via a dedicated website. In order to encourage a wide range of proposals, the member states are actively supported in organising promotional events on the Call.

ECML Workshops

Activity description

ECML workshops (central events) are targeted at participants selected by the ECML's 31 member states. They usually last between 2-3 days and in general constitute the core component of a project. They can serve a number of purposes: the setting up of ECML projects or the presentation of project results, as think tanks or awareness raising conferences, or with a clear focus on training for trainers/multipliers.

The working languages of the ECML are English and French, the official languages of the Council of Europe. ECML projects are normally conducted in these and interpretation in English and French is provided for central workshops. Some projects in the current programme use German as a working language in place of one of the official language.

Ideal participant

In order to increase the impact of the results achieved within ECML projects and effectively support change, dissemination on a wider scale is required. Project participants should therefore be in a position to disseminate results on a national / international scale.

  • Participants in ECML activities should have a ‘multiplying’ capacity (ie be in a position to disseminate the information they have acquired when they return to their own countries).
  • The project team specifies the profile of participant required for the workshops in the project description. This can be found on the respective project website under activities.

Nomination

Member states of the ECML may normally select one participant for each central event organised via their National Nominating Authority. The national authorities will choose and nominate the most appropriate participant from their countries, on the basis of the project/event description and national procedures and priorities. If you fit the profile for a specific workshop and wish to be considered for nomination as a participant, you should take up contact with your National Nominating Authority (NNA).

When more places are available additional participants may attend either at their own cost or that of their institution/Ministry. For non-member states of the ECML contact should be taken up with the corresponding national Ministry of Education or directly with the ECML.

ECML Regional events

Activity description

A regional event is a workshop or conference which is held in the framework of a certain project, where a topic is deemed to be of particular relevance to group of states. Regional events are organised in one of the ECML member states. The goal of regional events is to disseminate, at regional level, the results of a project, to contribute to the research and development process or to respond to specific interests of the member state in which it takes place.

Regional events in general last for 1-2 days and aim to promote an exchange of ideas and co-operation in the region.

Participation / Nomination

The number of participants in a regional event is in general 20-30. This comprises 6-8 international participants funded by the ECML and around 15 local participants selected and funded by the host institution or nominating authority. The international participants come from designated member states and are nominated by the ECML's national nominating authorities.
