Plickers

Principal function(s): Poll and survey creatorsQuiz/exercise makers

Plickers allows teachers to conduct polls or tests with the class, without students having to use their own mobile devices. Teachers can prepare cards (“paper clickers”) and use their smartphone or tablet to scan the cards and do instant "checks for understanding" or conduct impromptu polls. Teachers can prepare activities in advance on the website and print out the cards, which are assigned to each student. The data is automatically saved, student-by-student, at plickers.com, as the cards are scanned. Plickers is particularly useful in a setting where it is not suitable for students to use their own mobile devices in class. Depending on the type of activity planned, if students can use mobile devices, teachers might also consider using Kahoot. Evaluation: This is an extremely customizable tool which can be used, on both Android and iOS devices, for many different purposes e.g. to obtain feedback, test students’ knowledge on a specific topic, create quizzes, etc. It allows the whole class to participate in a novel and motivating manner, and the format of the cards means that students can answer the teacher’s questions discretely without their classmates knowing what their answers are.

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
