LibriVox

Principal function(s): Audiobooks

LibriVox is a platform where independent users share partial or complete audiobooks, which they have recorded themselves. It allows teachers and students of different foreign languages to browse the catalogue by author, title, genre, or language and to download the available audiobooks for free. These audio files are of public domain in the USA, but it may be necessary to verify their copyright status in order to use them for public purposes in other countries. Evaluation: The interface is very simple and easy to use. It is possible both to listen to the recorded audios on streaming and to download them. The accent and delivery are varied, as those who record themselves are volunteers. There are many titles available in some languages (especially in English) but very few in others.

Cost: Free without registration

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
